Uncanny
Something that is familiar but unsettling; the word is a translation of Freud's notion of 'unheimlich', which more directly translated would be 'unhomely', as a reminder of repressed impulses. In usage, the word has come to refer to any set of affects that is unlikely, shocking, unknown or supernatural, further destablised by usage such as the 'Uncanny X-Men' comic series. The 'uncanny valley' is the degree of empathy or unease with digital and robotic simulations of humanity.
“The feeling of walking down the street in Los Angeles is uncanny, like being in a film set.''
“It was a feeling of being seduced but at the same time disturbed, a kind of fascination and repulsion, it was uncanny.”
