Research
To research is to search for something (and to search for it again and again), until something new that we didnt know before becomes apparent. The aim of research is is discover new knowledge; What DIFFERENCE does your work make?
Secondary Research usually describes searching for knowledge in information which already exisits. This could be found in what other people have written or talked about a particular topic. This kind of research requires you to know who has written or spoken about the topic already? What have they said? What points have they made? What are their arguments? How did they influence the field more broadly? How do these opions and ideas differ from your own? Can you develop these ideas futher in your own work?
Primary Research usually describes something that you have personally found out. You may have carried out experiments in the studio, interviewed people to gather information, or observed the way audiences interact with different kinds of artworks to help you discover the knowledge you are searching for.
Both primary and secondary research are required to the highest level in any project through which you hope to produce unique and cutting edge work.
